A word about “0%”
Read for the word “deferred.”
The most expensive word in consumer lending is printed in the smallest type. On a deferred-interest plan, the promotional rate is zero only if you pay the entire balance before the promotion ends. Miss by a dollar and the interest comes back — calculated all the way to the first day.
Some plans are true 0%, and some are deferred. Both can be fine. What isn’t fine is not knowing which one you signed. So we say it out loud, at the kitchen table, before you sign: this plan is the kind that forgives, or this plan is the kind that remembers.
It is a small courtesy. You would be amazed how rare it is.
