Heat pumps · ducted & ductless

One machine. Both seasons. Half the arguments about the thermostat.

A heat pump cools all summer and heats all winter by moving heat instead of making it. In a climate like ours, that isn’t a compromise. It is the obvious choice the industry took thirty years to say out loud.

Know the signs

Good reasons to go heat pump

01

You heat with strips

Electric heat strips are toasters with a fan. A heat pump delivers the same warmth for roughly a third of the electricity.

02

Your AC is due anyway

A heat pump costs modestly more than an AC of the same quality and replaces two appliances’ worth of work.

03

Winter bills that spike

If January’s bill rivals July’s, the heating side is the problem — and the opportunity.

04

A room nobody can cool

Garage conversions, additions, and sunrooms are what ductless mini-splits were invented for.

05

You want it quiet

Inverter heat pumps idle along at low speed instead of slamming on and off. You stop hearing the house breathe.

What happens on the visit

Four steps. No mysteries.

  1. 1

    Load and electrical check

A heat pump must be sized for both seasons. We calculate both and confirm the panel can carry it.

  2. 2

    Choose your stage

    Single-stage, two-stage, or variable-speed — with dual-fuel if you’d like to keep a gas furnace as backup.

  3. 3

    Install and commission

Set, brazed, charged by weight, and tested in heating and cooling modes before we call it done.

  4. 4

    Teach the thermostat

We set auxiliary-heat lockouts properly. Most high heat pump bills are a thermostat nobody configured.

A refrigerator, running backward, with ambition

Your refrigerator pulls heat out of a box and dumps it into your kitchen. A heat pump does the same trick at the scale of a house: in summer it pulls heat out and dumps it outside; in winter it runs the trick in reverse and pulls heat in from outdoor air that feels cold to you and feels perfectly warm to refrigerant.

People who learn this tend to ask why anyone heats a house in South Texas any other way. The honest answer is habit. Furnaces were cheap, electricity was cheap, and nobody was counting. Somebody is counting now. It is the electric company.

A heat pump will not make you a better person. It will make your January bill look like it belongs to one.

FAQ

Heat Pumps: questions, answered

Didn’t see yours? Bea answers in seconds, day or night — and knows the price list by heart.

Yes. Modern heat pumps heat efficiently well below freezing, and on the rare San Antonio night that dips into the teens, auxiliary heat or a dual-fuel furnace picks up the slack automatically.

Usually by $700 to $1,500 for comparable equipment — and it replaces your heat strips or furnace’s job, so most homeowners recover the difference in lower winter bills.

Aux heat is the electric backup inside the air handler. It should run only in deep cold or defrost. A misconfigured thermostat runs it constantly. We set the lockouts so it behaves.

Yes. A dual-fuel system uses the heat pump most of the time and switches to gas below a temperature you choose. It is an excellent fit for older homes with good furnaces.

Twelve to fifteen years is typical here, a little less than an AC because they work in both seasons. Annual maintenance is the single best way to reach the top of that range.
